At the first stained glass was made mainly used for the beautiful windows in cathedrals, churches, palaces and the famous building to decorate. Great artists over the centuries made larger than life murals in windows with religious, historical and mythological scenes. Originally done in flat panel embossed modern exponents of this art form are now creating three-dimensional structures and pieces of sculpture. These windows are also known as illuminated wall decorations. Ancient civilizations including the Egyptians and Romans made stained glass.
Churches and monasteries in Britain dating back to the 7th century, are decorated with this beautiful pattern windows. At one point this art form was practiced only by great artists and their students. For centuries only the select few worked in this form, but in the twentieth century saw a revival and many glass artists took the art. First, the rival happened as a result of tremendous amount of restoration needed to repair and maintain ancient windows in historic buildings that were destroyed and damaged during the Second World War.
